It is also the right choice for large-scale installations with many drives in a single enclosure (where the RV sensors and unlimited bay support matter), for systems recording from many high-bitrate 4K cameras simultaneously, and for any installation that exceeds the 180 TB/year workload limit of the standard Purple. For straightforward HD surveillance with up to 8 drive bays and no AI analytics, the standard WD Purple is an excellent and more cost-effective option.
What does "32 AI streams" mean in practice?
AI streams refer to the data streams generated by AI analytics processing — facial recognition matches, object tracking events, metadata tagging, and deep learning inference results — that are written to the drive alongside the raw video footage. A modern AI-enabled NVR processes this data continuously for every camera feed that has analytics enabled. The Purple Pro is rated to handle 32 of these AI streams concurrently without performance degradation. Standard drives and even the regular WD Purple are not validated for this workload, which can cause recording drops, lag in analytics results, or drive failures under sustained AI stream pressure.
How many days of footage will 10TB store?
Recording duration depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate, and your NVR's compression format. As a general estimate using 1080p HD at standard H.264 compression (approximately 10–15 GB per camera per day): a single camera produces roughly 650–1,000 days of footage on 10TB. With 16 cameras recording continuously, the same 10TB stores approximately 40–60 days. Most commercial NVR systems display estimated recording time based on your exact configuration. For installations requiring longer retention across many cameras, multiple drives in a RAID or JBOD configuration are common.
What are RV sensors and why do they matter in multi-drive NVRs?
When multiple hard drives operate in the same enclosure, their rotating platters create vibration that affects neighbouring drives — causing read/write errors, reduced performance, and accelerated wear. Rotational Vibration (RV) sensors detect this vibration in real time and compensate electronically, maintaining accuracy and performance stability. This is particularly important in high-density NVR enclosures with 8, 16, or more drives. The standard WD Purple does not include RV sensors, which is one reason the Purple Pro is specified for large multi-bay deployments.
